Close-up view of the light band pattern on a DVD mold. The distance between each light band is .000011.6"
|
Reflex viewing with the Cartrilamp allows you to place the part ON TOP of the optical flat and read the surface interference light bands in the viewing mirror as shown in the close-up at right. Each light band is equal to 11.6 millionths of an inch.
Reading the light bands is just like reading a terrain map where surface contours, planes and elevations on the earth's surface are defined by lines with varying shapes and distances apart. Where the terrain map shows 10' of elevation for each contour line, each line in the Cartrilamp is 11.6 millionths of an inch. Light bands or interference fringes represent the exact contours of the work piece.
Multiple Checks
The standard 10" optical flat allows for many smaller parts to be placed on it and inspected at the same time. So the 10" optical flat does the work of smaller flats, eliminating the need for additional smaller flats for checking smaller parts. However, if you desire, smaller diameter optical flats are also available and can be made to your specifications. Our standard sizes are 8", 10", and 12".
Cost Comparison
For accuracy, the Cartrilamp can only be compared to the Laser Interferometer. Both systems will give you identical results, measuring the flatness of parts at the submicron level. The difference in cost between the two systems, however, is staggering.
The cost of a Laser Interferometer, depending on its size, is a factor of 20 to 50 times more expensive than the Cartrilamp System. That means that you can have 20 to 50 measuring systems with the Cartilamp - one for each work station - for the cost of one Laser Interferometer. It can also be used, with total assurance, for final quantitative quality inspection to a tolerance of less than .000005" (five millionths of an inch).

Accuracy
The work shown above is typical of the jobs demanding near zero tolerance that Surface Finishes handles every day. From CD and DVD molds to seals for Nuclear Submarines, high performance quality assurance to millionths of an inch is a given. For each of those jobs and hundreds more like them, the Cartrilamp was used for both in-process and final quality control.
