Optical Flats
The optical flats shown above represent different sizes, materials, shapes and customized cuts for specialized applications.
   
The optical flats shown at right enable Surface Finishes to produce components for very high tech applications. This extraordinarily close tolerance work can be achieved by using the Cartrilamp System with an optical flat. Our system measures surface differences in wavelengths of light.
    
The following analogy gives an everyday reference point to visualize the relative precision of our reference flats: 2 millionths of an inch over a 12 inch diameter is quivalent to 1 foot over 1,100 miles, the distance between Chicago and Denver. Visualize driving on a road so flat that you could drive from Chicago to Denver without going up or down more than 12".
    
These reference flats can be made in three different materials, two different accuracies, and any size ranging from 1" to 16" diameter.


Custom Flats

Our custom flats can be made to measure the surface flatness of virtually any design configuration, such as shoulders, protruding shafts necessitating a hole in the optical flat, or a recessed pocket where the optical flat is made to mate with the shape of the recess.
    
When our customized flats are used with a light wave measuring system, it extends the ability to use this measuring technique beyond only exposed flat surfaces.
    
Customized flats with holes or different shapes, sizes and measuring configurations can be crafted to fit whatever part you need to measure.

Resurfacing

We offer a refinishing service that will take your used, out of calibration flats and recalibrate and recertify them traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Testing). If you have optical flats that are damaged with scratches, or have hazy viewing conditions, we can resurface them to like new condition, recalibrate and recertify them as well.
